This is an onsite position on the main campus of Northern Arizona University located in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Job Description

The candidate chosen for this position will work as a member of a team of systems administrators responsible for maintaining NAU’s academic and research systems, services and applications. Major systems, services and applications currently supported include staff and faculty applications, web and file servers plus many departmental servers, services and applications. The team is also responsible for NAU’s High Performance Cluster (HPC) cluster environment. This team maintains and administers many Windows and Linux servers on both physical hardware and on Citrix and Hyper-V virtualized environments. Team members work with a wide range of technical people including software developers, database administrators, application administrators, support center staff, and end users. This is an onsite position.

Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems.
Perform operating system upgrades and apply OS patches as needed.
Install and manage Apache web services including mod security, configuration of websites and troubleshooting their use. Assist in maintaining Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP environments.
Support HPC clusters and services
Maintain a high level of reliability, availability, system security, and integrity on all systems.
Monitor systems to assure acceptable performance and perform system tuning as needed.
Develop and maintain Perl, Python, and shell scripts to automate systems tasks and management.
Install, configure, and maintain enterprise applications.
Install, configure, and maintain open source software.
May be assigned primary responsibility for specific services/servers, and will provide backup for other systems the team is responsible for maintaining.
Participate in 7x24 on-call schedule. Must be able to respond to emergencies by being on-site within 30 minutes under normal circumstances.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and three years of systems and programming experience; OR,
Associate’s degree in Computer Science or related field and four years of systems and programming experience; OR,
Five years of systems and programming experience; OR,
Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities


Extensive experience with UNIX or Linux installation, maintenance, and administration in an enterprise server environment.
Knowledge and experience with all aspects of Apache web services including SSL, mod security, and site configuration and migration.
Knowledge and experience with Perl and/or Linux shell scripting.
Demonstrated networking experience with TCP/IP and familiarity with full range of network hardware and protocols.
Ability to document technical processes and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team.
Experience working in a 7x24 on-call environment.
Strong communications skills are desirable.
Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Red Hat Linux server level experience.
Knowledge and experience of LDAP (including complex queries), EZproxy, Sympa, CPAN for Perl, PHP, Python\PIP and Shibboleth authentication.
Knowledge and experience of administering and managing WordPress.
Knowledge and experience of High Performance Computing; including the following technologies:
SLURM, Moab/Torque, and/or Grid Computing.
Use of accelerators, such as GPUs, in HPC environments.
Monitoring tools such as Nagios, Pandora and/or Ganglia.
Administration of high performance data storage and parallel filesystems: Lustre, GPFS
NAS storage, MPI, DNS, LDAP, event logging, SNMP, Samba, SAN, NFS, RAID, Python, C
Experience managing information technology resources in a complex organization with a large heterogeneous distributed computing environment.
Experience in server virtualization in a Linux environment using Citrix XenServer and Hyper-V.
