After the Storm - Simulating and Visualizing Extreme Weather with XSEDE
In the old days, scientists had to search through hundreds of real storm records trying to determine the consequences of specific conditions on the progression of a particular storm. Now, they can use models. For Brian Jewett at the University of Illinois, XSEDE makes all these simulations possible. Using Stampede, Stampede 2, and the Ranch mass storage system at TACC as well as ECSS assistance, Jewett is able to analyze, simulate, and visualize severe storms to help scientists enhance their knowledge of how and why severe storms such as tornadoes and winter storms strike. "These optical array probes were like laser cameras that gathered information on cloud and snow particles that blew through them as the aircraft flew along," Jewett explains.
Supercomputing More Light Than Heat
A study found that recent computational and theoretical developments have enabled the location of defect-induced conical intersections in semiconductor nanomaterials. XSEDE allocated over 975,000 compute hours on the Maverick supercomputing system at the Texas Advanced Computing Center to help in this materials research, which will aid scientists who seek to discover next-generation materials for solar cells and LED lights. XSEDE Launches Diversity Forum
Did you know? XSEDE recently launched a Diversity and Inclusion program to assist underrepresented minorities (URM), women, and Minority Serving Institution (MSI) faculty in joining the XSEDE community so that they can benefit from the resources and services provided. The program collaborates with individual researchers in support of their research and teaching goals and with institutions to promote broad adoption of computational science and data analytics in their research practice. The XSEDE Diversity Forum connects outreach and diversity managers at each of the XSEDE partners for the purpose of sharing best practices, program opportunities, and reviewing XSEDE services and programs to ensure that they are inclusive. The program's components—conference exhibiting, campus visits, regional workshops, and the minority research community — create awareness and increase URM and MSI faculty participation in the XSEDE community. Their next stop will be at the Emerging Researchers National Conference, February 22-24, 2018 in Washington, D.C. Read more >>
During December 2017 and January 2018, the User Requirements Evaluation and Prioritization (UREP) team reviewed a set of seventeen newly proposed use cases for the XSEDE system and rated their importance in light of the community's needs. The proposed use cases came from a variety of sources, including the Community Engagement & Enrichment (CEE) team, discussions at conferences, staff proposals, and a project-wide needs analysis. This UREP guidance will help focus XSEDE's work on delivering software capabilities that provide the highest value to the community. Read more >>

Introduction to SDSC's Comet Supercomputer Webinar
DSC is offering a webinar on February 15 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. (PT) to provide a brief introduction and some hands-on instruction for users who are relatively new to SDSC's Comet supercomputer as well as for those who need a refresher. This will include an overview of the Comet architecture, available software, running jobs on both the CPU and GPU partitions, and file management. This webinar will also cover how big data frameworks like Hadoop and Spark can be dynamically spun up within the Comet batch scheduling framework, and will conclude with a brief summary on using Singularity based containers on Comet. XSEDE HPC Workshop: GPU Programming Using OpenACC
XSEDE along with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center is pleased to announce a one day OpenACC workshop on March 6, 2018. OpenACC is the accepted standard using compiler directives to allow quick development of GPU capable codes using standard languages and compilers. It has been used with great success to accelerate real applications within very short development periods. This workshop assumes knowledge of either C or Fortran programming. Science Gateways Bootcamp, May 14-18, 2018 at TACC - Now accepting applications!
Are you building or developing a science gateway (portal, virtual research environment, digital interface)? If so, the Science Gateways Bootcamp could be for you. Science Gateways Bootcamp: Strategies for Developing, Operating, and Sustaining Your Gateway is a week-long workshop for leaders of gateways who want to further develop and scale their work. Participants engage in hands-on activities to help them articulate the value of their work to key stakeholders and to create a strong development, operations, and sustainability plan. There is no cost to participate in the Bootcamp.
