10-Year Anniversary of Campus Champions

2018 marks the 10-year anniversary of the XSEDE and NSF supported Campus Champions program! Formed in 2008 with just a couple of Champions during TeraGrid, XSEDE's predecessor, the program has since evolved into a community of over 400 Campus Champions at more than 200 US colleges and universities helping researchers nationwide facilitate computing and data-intensive research and education and use the advanced digital resources that best meet their needs. Silky Secrets to Make Bones

XSEDE systems Stampede1 and Comet help sample protein folding in bone regeneration study A recent study in the journal of Advanced Functional Materials found that genes could be activated in human stem cells that initiate biomineralization, a key step in bone formation. Scientists engineered spider web silk combined with silica to activate a cell membrane protein receptor called integrin. XSEDE resources used include Stampede1 at the Texas Advanced Computing Center and Comet at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The research will help scientists model intracellular pathways that govern bone formation and efforts to cure diseases such as osteoporosis and calcific aortic valve disease.  Read more >>

Head Injury in the Cloud

From children's playing fields to professional stadiums to battlefields, doctors are more and more worried about traumatic brain injury (TBI) that lurks after a seemingly minor concussion. Don Krieger is part of a team of clinician-researchers at the University of Pittsburgh who are studying TBI. They produce very high resolution functional brain images from magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings using a powerful new method called "referee consensus processing." Their calculations rely on opportunistic use of "backfill" and other unused cycles on XSEDE computing resources. Their results show great promise in providing high resolution functional images of normal and TBI-affected brain activity.  Read more >>

MEG-derived results from a CamCAN volunteer are superimposed on MRI images. The images from left to right move upward through the brain. Activity in the right inferior parietal cortex (yellow markers) is higher (red) than that in the adjacent white matter rim (blue), p 10^16. Surprisingly, the opposite is true for the right middle frontal cortex (green markers) whose activity is lower (blue) than the adjacent white matter (red), p 10^16. Referee consensus processing is the only method with sufficient sensitivity and resolution to detect this result.

Bio-based Compound Offers a Greener Carbon Fiber Alternative

From cars and bicycles to airplanes and space shuttles, manufacturers around the world are trying to make these vehicles lighter, which helps lower fuel use and lessen the environmental footprint. One way to do so is by using carbon fiber composites, however, current production of these composites relies heavily on petroleum products. A recent study published in the December 2017 issue of Science reported the results of experimental and computational investigations on the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into a bio-based chemical called acrylonitrile, the key precursor to manufacturing carbon fiber. With the help of XSEDE resources, specifically Stampede 1, researchers hope to figure out a way to produce acrylonitrile from lignocellulosic biomass in an economically viable way, which could potentially decouple the acrylonitrile price from petroleum and offer a green carbon fiber alternative to using fossil fuels.  Read more >>

February 2018 Deadline Approaches for the Blue Waters Graduate Fellowship

The Blue Waters Graduate Fellowship Program is a unique program funded by the National Science Foundation. As part of this program, several graduate students from across the country will be immersed in a year of focused high-performance computing (HPC) and data-intensive research. The fellowships will empower the selected PhD students to advance their HPC knowledge while also providing them with access to Blue Waters and support to accelerate their research. Applications, including all supporting materials except reference letters, must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm PST on Feb. 2, 2018. Reference letters are due by 11:59 pm PST on Feb. 9, 2018. Awards will be announced in spring 2018, with the tuition allowance applied to the 2018-2019 academic year.
