XSEDE Supercomputers Help UCLA-Led Team Identify Genes Associated with Surviving Climate Change
 
 
A UCLA-led team has found they can predict whether birds are vulnerable to climate change by comparing their genes to their changing environments. Using XSEDE supercomputers, Rachael Bay and her colleagues working with the  Bird Genoscape Project   found they could identify genes in the yellow warbler and the willow flycatcher that associate with recent declines in local populations of each bird. The work is a first step in understanding climate sensitivity of many species that the researchers hope will offer new tools to conservation managers.

XSEDE Supercomputers Provide Insight into Neutron Star Structures and Mergers
 
 
During a supernova, a single massive star explodes – some die and form black holes while others survive, depending on the star's mass. Some of these supernova survivors are stars whose centers collapse and their protons and electrons form into a neutron star, which has an average gravitational pull that is two billion times the gravity on Earth.
 
Researchers in two separate, recently published studies relied on the power of  XSEDE-allocated supercomputers  to create detailed simulations of neutron star structures and mergers to better understand gravitational waves, or invisible space ripples in the universe, detected for the first time in 2015 as hypothesized by Albert Einstein some 100 years earlier.

XSEDE and Aristotle Cloud Federation partner to implement clouds on U.S. campuses
The  XSEDE Cyberinfrastructure Resource Integration (CRI) group  and Aristotle Cloud Federation project have joined forces to help university systems administrators implement cloud computing systems on their campuses.
 
After an initial phone consultation, XSEDE staff will assist campus systems administrators or researchers onsite with the configuration of their OpenStack cloud and ensure that they have the knowledge they need to maintain it. There is no fee for XSEDE staff to travel to U.S. campuses and provide this service; the service is performed as part of the XSEDE CRI group's mission to help campus cyberinfrastructure staff manage their local computing and storage resources.
 
Campus systems administrators or scientific research centers interested in participating in this opportunity should contact  help@xsede.org . The OpenStack cloud implementation service will be available starting September 2019.
 
 
XSEDE Campus Champion Dina Tandabany Receives 2019 HBCU STEM Innovator Award
Last month, Dr. Dinadayalane (Dina) Tandabany, an associate professor of chemistry at Clark Atlanta University and active member of the XSEDE community, was one of seven nationwide faculty presented with the 2019 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Innovator Award at the  33 rd  Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Global Competitiveness Conference hosted by Lockheed Martin, US Black Engineer Magazine, and the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU). Gateways 2019 Call for Participation
Abstracts due April 29; Full submissions due May 6
Call for Participation: Gateways 2019  (September 23–25, San Diego, California) is now accepting submissions of papers, demos, tutorials, and panels (2-4 pages) on the topic of gateways for science, engineering, or other disciplines. Gateways are user-friendly interfaces to scientific computing, data, and other domain-specific resources to support research and education.
 
Topics may include their design, use, impact, development processes, sustainability, best practices, or any other aspect that you think fellow gateway creators or users will find interesting to learn. We also welcome educational topics directed toward the next generation of gateway creators.  In addition, this year Gateways 2019 is co-located with the  eScience   conference.  The two conferences will offer shared sessions and connected registration.
 
Abstracts are due April 29, and full submissions are due May 6, 2019.  A poster session deadline (open to all attendees) will be August 15.
 
 
PEARC19: Calling all students!
Did you know that PEARC19 offers a robust student program with student-specific activities as well as inclusion in the full technical program? It's a great opportunity for students to present their research and meet others in their field. Letters of Intent for student technical papers are due March 13, 2019 .
 
PEARC19 is also now accepting proposal submissions for panels and special events.
 
The deadline for  panel submissions is March 13, 2019 .
 
Though the high-priority deadline for special event submissions has passed, low-priority proposals will be accepted until June 5, 2019.

Apply by March 13 for Trusted CI's Open Science Cybersecurity Fellows Program
Trusted CI serves the scientific community as the NSF Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, providing leadership and assistance with cybersecurity in support of research. In 2019, Trusted CI is establishing an Open Science Cybersecurity Fellows program which will establish and support a network of Fellows with diversity in both geography and scientific discipline. These Fellows will have access to training and other resources to foster their professional development in cybersecurity. In exchange, they will champion cybersecurity for science in their scientific and geographic communities, and communicate challenges and successful practices to Trusted CI.
 
The Open Science Cybersecurity Fellows program will accept six Fellows who will receive recognition, cybersecurity professional development training, and travel funding. Learn more and apply through the link below.

The WINS (Women in Networking) program is seeking qualified female U.S. candidates in their early to mid-career to join the SCinet volunteer workforce for SC19. Selected candidates will receive full travel support and mentoring by well-known engineering experts in the research
