How to Catch a Fish Genome with Big Data
Researchers from the Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, Iowa State University, and the Instituto Polit√©cnico Nacional in Mexico assembled and annotated for the first time the genome of the fish species Seriola dorsalis using XSEDE resources. Also known as California Yellowtail, it's a fish of high value to the seafood industry. Insights into its genome will help with breeding and commercialization. They published their results in January 2018 in the journal BMC Genomics.
Supercomputer Simulations Reveal New "Achilles heel" in Dengue Virus
With access to high performance supercomputers provided through an XSEDE allocation, a team of researchers at Colorado State University has identified a critical protein structure that could serve as a molecular Achilles heel able to inhibit the replication of dengue virus and potentially other flaviviruses such as West Nile and Zika virus. Their results were published in the Public Library of Science (PLOS) Computational Biology journal in April, 2018.
When Winds Get Rough
Wind power is clean and renewable. In the right geographic areas, it's also dependable. But the winds that create wind power can also buffet the wind turbine with violent changes of speed and direction. Over time, that buffeting wears down on the turbines' internal parts, causing them to break down and fail. This is a major financial drain on wind-energy plants, limiting the expansion of wind power. A team of researchers used XSEDE experts and resources to optimize their "large-eddy simulation" studies of the effects of atmospheric turbulence on wind turbines. Their end goal is to increase the lifetime of wind-turbine components in response to these non-steady wind stresses. If components last longer, wind energy will cost less and be feasible in more places.
Catching Mantle Plumes by Their Magma Tails
While we're learning more about how Hawaii's volcanos formed, what remains elusive is conclusive evidence regarding the existence of mantle plumes (hypothesized, mushroom-shaped upwellings of hot rock formed within the thermal boundary layer at the base of the mantle and thought to carry heat from Earth's core that generates a volcano's magma). However, with the help of XSEDE, researchers have conducted the best computational modeling to date of mantle plumes, showing for the first time details of how plumes decelerate seismic waves and how plumes appear in seismic tomographic images of the Earth's mantle. These findings could help guide future experiments on the ocean floor with deep Earth imaging and help get to the bottom of mysteries like the origin of Hawaii's volcanos.

XSEDE, along with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center will be presenting a Hybrid Computing workshop June 4-7. This 4 day event will include MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC and accelerators and will be presented using the Wide Area Classroom (WAC) training platform and will conclude with a special hybrid exercise contest that will challenge the students to apply their skills over the following 3 weeks and be awarded the Fifth Annual XSEDE Summer Boot Camp Championship Trophy. Gateways 2018 Call for Proposals Deadline Extended to May 16!
The deadline for the Gateways 2018 Call for Participation has been extended to May 16, 2018.
Gateways 2018 (September 25-27, at the University of Texas at Austin) is accepting submissions of papers, demos, tutorials, and panels (2-4 pages) on the topic of science or engineering gateways. Topics
may include their design, use, impact, development processes, sustainability, best practices, or any other aspect that you think fellow gateway creators or users will find interesting to learn. We also welcome educational topics directed toward the next generation of gateway creators. The poster session deadline (open to all) is August 1, 2018. Are you building or developing a science gateway (portal, virtual research environment, digital interface)? If so, the Science Gateways Bootcamp could be for you. 
Science Gateways Bootcamp: Strategies for Developing, Operating, and Sustaining Your Gateway is a week-long workshop for leaders of gateways who want to further develop and scale their work. Participants engage in hands-on activities to help them articulate the value of their work to key stakeholders and to create a strong development, operations, and sustainability plan. By the end of the Bootcamp, participants will have developed a working hypothesis of their sustainability strategy and identified the key action steps to get there.
The next Bootcamp, offered by the Science Gateways Community Institute, will take place August 13-17, 2018 in Chicago, IL. There is no cost to participate in the Bootcamp. Applications will be accepted through June 22, 2018. Learn more and apply at the link below.
