XSEDE 2.0 is here!

The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), first established in 2011, has been awarded a $110 million, five-year National Science Foundation (NSF) award to continue expanding access of advanced cyberinfrastructure resources to the nation's scientist and engineers. The award provides a continuity of services valuable to its large user community, in particular the coordination of resources and people that make the national cyberinfrastructure ecosystem so effective. Soybeans science blooms with supercomputers

The SoyKB project started its computation with XSEDE through an allocation awarded in 2014 on the Stampede supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. In all, it has used about 370,000 core hours on a massive project to sequence and analyze the genomes of over 1,000 soybean germplasm lines. Read more

Gut check

Scientists Wenxuan Zhong and Ping Ma of the University of Georgia's Franklin College, with Zhong's graduate student Xin Xing, set out to identify and sequence the DNA of virtually all the microbes in a healthy and a diabetes-affected human gut. Working with XSEDE Extended Collaborative Support Service expert Phil Blood of PSC, they used advanced DNA sequencing technology and PSC's Bridges supercomputer to assemble DNA from many microbial species in human fecal samples at once. Champions hit the Rockies

XSEDE Campus Champions took part in the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC) symposium held August 9-11. The three-day event was held at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, giving the opportunity for universities and laboratories in the Rocky Mountain region to discuss current activities through panel discussions and tutorial sessions on research, education, and best practices in computational science and high performance networking.
