Software Engineer/Programmer II position available at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
Title: Software Engineer/Programmer II
What You Will Do:
Assists in the design, development and implementation of complex, distributed applications and services supporting the many users of CISL’s high-end computing environment, including allocation proposal submission, accounting systems, and reporting interfaces. Participates in Agile software delivery teams for selected aspects or components of production-level systems. Contributes to the full product life cycle including system analysis; high-level system design; and integration of large-scale technology within complex information systems. Works with colleagues from CISL’s Software and Web Engineering Group and collaborators from externally funded projects to design, implement, integrate and maintain software tools in support of users’ information needs. Responsible for programming and code documentation on multiple platforms relying on underlying relational database systems.
Contributes as a member of an Agile Scrum team on the formulation of system design, software implementation, testing, documentation and evaluation of technologies related to user-facing systems in support of CISL research services. The tasks will range from underlying infrastructure improvements to business-logic modifications to user interface enhancements for users and administrators. Collaborates with team members, end users, and project stakeholders to design and develop solutions to complex problems. Responsible for developing, testing and delivering specific software components based on team objectives with a strong focus on delivering high-quality results.
Collaborates with developers on externally funded and managed programs, with tasks assigned by the relevant program manager. Activities will include enhancements to a variety of interfaces and back-end components, including improvement of existing code as well as implementation of new features and capabilities.
Provides technical support to technical and non-technical staff on the usage of the various systems and services, including running, debugging and monitoring. Writes documentation and training material for both internal and external reference.
What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in computer-related field and progressive relevant experience, with four to eight years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Programming and development experience in Ruby on Rails or other platforms, applications and languages, working with data sources and websites.
Demonstrated skill in applying the software development process and in applying software engineering methodologies, including Object-Oriented Design and release management.
Experience with software development tools such as IDEs, debuggers, profilers, build tools, source code management tools and practices, issue tracking.
Working knowledge of web protocols, application servers, and content platforms
Experience with at least one Linux or Unix-like operating system.
Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
Skill in organizing and documenting technical information in a clear and understandable manner.
Willingness to travel on occasion.
Desired but not required:
A strong candidate will also have experience with and knowledge of a variety of web application areas and development technologies, including:
Relational databases and applications, such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Web standards and frameworks including XML, JSON, and REST.
Automated testing tools and frameworks.
Docker and other DevOps tools and approaches
Competency in designing user-friendly user interfaces.
Experience with continuous delivery approaches and practices.
