High Performance Computing Team Lead Position at University of Connecticut
Under the direction of the Manager of Server Support, this position is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the effective operations of High Performance Computing (HPC) and related research technologies in University Information Technology Services (UITS). The HPC cluster at UITS serves as the catalyst for research in computationally intensive disciplines, in alignment with the university’s ambitious initiatives – UConn Technology Park, Next Generation Connecticut, and Bioscience Connecticut. The cluster has over 6,000 CPU cores, a one petabyte parallel file system (GPFS), and an Infiniband interconnect.
Individuals at this level are expected to have comprehensive working knowledge and technical experience with enterprise-wide hardware and software, the ability to install complex software and to resolve the most difficult computer-related problems. Work is difficult and complex, requiring considerable planning and varies over a wide range of technical tasks which present new and unusual problems. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts needs analyses and feasibility studies for UITS and the campus community to enhance research technology programs. Oversees a team that provides technical consultation and system administration for researchers. Engages with leaders of research groups, academic departments, and departmental information technology groups to ensure alignment with strategies and objectives of UITS and the University.
Designs and delivers a robust and flexible portfolio of computational, storage, and network services. Independently resolves highly complex systems integration issues and develops plans and processes to mitigate risk to services or systems.
Serves as a key contact with vendors and other external organizations to establish and maintain strategic partnerships.
Analyzes and prepares project plans and leads technical projects.
Trains and educates computer professionals and users in various complex technical areas or new technology. Makes recommendations for advancing technology at the University.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field; or equivalent experience in the same technologies.
At least three years of experience in developing and implementing research computing technologies and services.
At least five years of progressively responsible experience in managing complex technology systems in a professional environment.
At least three years of demonstrated managerial and supervisory ability.
Experience in budget, financial, and resource management.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, correctly, knowledgeably, respectfully, and effectively, verbally and in writing, face to face and in front of a group.
Demonstrated ability to effectively solve complex problems, using analysis, creative thinking, and input from others to improve processes, solve complex problems, and develop effective strategies.
Advanced understanding of science workflows and cyberinfrastructure for the support of diverse research environments.
Considerable knowledge of computing hardware and software used in scientific computing environments.
Knowledge of high-performance networks and parallel file systems.
Ability to understand needs and explain concepts to a diverse audience with varying technical backgrounds and levels of understanding.
Experiencing managing research technologies in a higher education institution.
Considerable knowledge of departmental and institutional structures and goals.
