NCAR/CISL Information Systems Division Director

NCAR has an exciting, new opportunity for an Information Systems Division Director in Boulder, Colorado! The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world’s premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences.

Be NCAR’s Information System leader in a Laboratory that provides HPC computing, data storage, networking and services for thousands of atmospheric and geoscience researchers. As a dedicated team member, help CISL develop its foundational system infrastructures that enable community-critical discovery and new understanding in advanced earth system studies.

The Information System Division (ISD) is one of four Divisions in the Computational Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) at NCAR. The ISD Director reports to the CISL Director and works collaboratively with the other Divisions that are responsible for networking, enterprise services, the NCAR-Wyoming Super Computer Center, HPC systems and storage, and technology development.

The ISD Director is responsible for overall leadership of 5-7 Groups/Sections, approximately 35 staff. The ISD staff are responsible for data curation and stewardship, software engineering for data access, development of data management and analysis environments, workflow optimization applications, visualization and data analysis applications, data assimilation research and model development, and regional projection model assessment that is a joint effort with the NCAR Research and Applications Laboratory.

The ISD Director provides vision, direction, and management across the suite of research, services, and operations within the Division in coordination with the CISL Executive Council (EC), which includes the CISL Director and peer Division Directors that are responsible for networking, enterprise services, the NCAR-Wyoming Super Computer Center, HPC systems and storage, and technology development. As a member of the CISL EC, he/she participates with the CISL EC in formulating strategic goals, implementations stemming from the strategies, and in executing CISL activities mainly in the Laboratory, but also extending to other NCAR Laboratories. The incumbent is responsible for hiring and maintaining well-trained professional staff that carry out ISD plans and managing the Division’s budget.

This position is engaged with and builds peer institution relationships in order to share, influence, and gain perspective about expert information systems designed to meet user needs and support multi-disciplinary workflows in geoscience research.
