Information Technologist II Position at Michigan State University

The Information Technologist II will develop, support and optimize systems and processes for the management and automation of High Performance Computing systems. Duties include: support and optimize data storage systems, including capacity planning and disaster recovery planning; security in particular network security and data security appropriate for research projects; ability to work with Firewall configuration and rules; experience with virtual machine implementations such as Docker and Singularity containers; participate in the development of facilities to support High Performance Computing systems on campus; provide the University with expert advice on data storage systems and issues that affect the HPCC’s operations; work with management and other units on campus to create innovative solutions to University business problems; manage complex projects that serve the entire university; consult with users to ensure the best use of finite University computational resources while assisting users in reaching their research goals in a cost-effective and timely manner.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A bachelor’s degree in the field of Information Technology, with six years of experience or progressively increasing responsibility in the IT industry, or equivalent experience; experience with Ethernet networking operating systems such as Juniper JUNOS; Experience with administering server operating systems (including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, or derivatives) and services (NFS, Lustre, ZFS, OpenSSH, gridFTP, OpenLDAP) in high performance computing environments, scripting languages (including Bash, Python, and Perl), high performance computing and scientific computing applications, programming languages (including C, C++, Fortran, MPI, CUDA, OpenMP), security, networking technologies (Including Ethernet and Infiniband) and hard ward (including Mellanox and Juniper), hardware diagnostics and maintenance, configuration management and automation (tools like xCAT, Puppet, kickstart, SNMP, and IPMI), batch job queueing and scheduling systems (Moab and TORQUE), database programming and administration (MySQL and Postgres) and version control (git.) Experience building, troubleshooting and supporting scientific software.
