MATLAB Seminars at Purdue University – October 13, 2011

Join MathWorks for free seminars on MATLAB on Thursday, October 13, 2011 in the Lawson Computer Science Building, Room 1142.  Presented by: Jiro Doke, Ph.D., Senior Application Engineer and Gerardo Hernandez, Application Engineer

3:00 – 3:30 p.m.

Registration and sign-in. Walk-ins are welcome.

3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Session 1: Data Analysis with MATLAB

During this session we will use examples to demonstrate how to acquire, analyze, and visualize data through mathematical, statistical, and engineering functions that support common engineering operations. This session is designed to be an overview of the MATLAB technical computing environment, including desktop tools for editing and debugging code, publishing your work, programming and 3-D visualization, and creating graphical user interfaces (GUI).

Highlights include:

  • Importing data from various sources
  • Performing statistical analysis
  • Automating analysis via automatic m-code generation
  • Building GUI’s and generating reports

6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Session 2: Joint Parallel Computing Seminar and HPC Workshop

Part 1: Parallel Computing with MATLAB(90 min)

This session will show you how new products and features for MATLAB enable you to take advantage of recent advances in computer hardware, including multiprocessor machines, computer clusters, and graphics processing units (GPUs).

You will learn about:

• Considerations for transitioning from serial to parallel MATLAB programs

• Executing applications on a multicore or multiprocessor workstation

• Automatically speed up some toolbox functions

• Easily speed up your own algorithms using parallel FOR loops

• Scaling algorithms up to a computing cluster

Part 2: Accessing MATLAB on the RCAC HPC resources(30 min)

Representatives from the Rosen Center for Advanced Computing will demonstrate

• How to gain access to the RCAC cluster

• Use your MATLAB code on RCAC High Performance Computing system

NSF Cyberlearning Research Summit Call for Participation and Speaker Nominations
January 15, 2011 – Washington, DC

The Cyberlearning Research Summit will be a high-profile gathering featuring top quality research-based speakers, who will share visions for the future of learning with emerging technologies, in style of the TED conferences. Building on those visions, participants will gather as birds-of-a-feather to crystallize a sense of the unique opportunities that should be the focus of the research community now.  We seek a community sense of how to couple the learning sciences with related fields of innovation to leverage new technology affordances for the deepest learning outcomes. Through the contributions of diverse participants, the summit seeks to exemplify the “transformative potential” of cutting edge research and development to dramatically advance learning – and is expected to be influential in identifying promising directions for advanced R&D efforts. The summit is sponsored by the National Science Foundation as a means to engage the community in accelerating the focus on transformative R&D in Cyberlearning and related programs, and is hosted by SRI International, the National Geographic Society, and the Lawrence Hall of Science, signaling a strong commitment to innovative STEM learning both in schools and beyond schools. For more information about the summit, nominating a speaker, and becoming a participant visit: http://cyberlearning.sri.com

Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference – Call for Abstracts
February 27-29, 2012 – Palo Alto, California
Submission Deadline – December 2, 2011

NSRC-2012 will provide a forum for researchers, educators, and other users to learn about the research and EPO capabilities of these new systems, their experiments, and EPO integration processes. NSRC-2012 will also provide the user community for these vehicles a key opportunity to make inputs on vehicle design and operational requirements. The conference will bring together researchers from government, industry, and academia in the largest forum of it’s kind, providing key networking opportunities for the entire community. For more information and to register, please visit http://nsrc.swri.org/.

New Software Brings Science to Life for Young People

Researchers funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have developed a software toolkit that shows how such an approach sparks and sustains students’ interest in science. The use of new technology is helping students to become real ‘science investigators’. Researchers funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have developed a software toolkit that shows how such an approach sparks and sustains students’ interest in science. "Science can be hard to sell to young people as a subject for further education or as a career," says Professor Mike Sharples from Nottingham University who co-led the project. The project shows that the nQuire software engages children’s interest more effectively than traditional science lessons where teachers often dispense science facts from a classroom desk. By using mobile computing devices, the software allows students to go out and set up their own projects. They can both find and analyze the data and reach their own conclusions based on hypotheses, which they have chosen themselves. Student Engagement

The Gerald A. Soffen Memorial Fund Announces Final 2011 Travel Grant Opportunities
Application Deadline – October 15, 2011

The application process is open for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing studies in fields of space science and engineering. The Travel Grants, in the amount of $500, enable student recipients to attend professional meetings to present their research. Jerry Soffen, a biologist by training, led a distinguished career in NASA, including serving as the Project Scientist for Viking and as an architect for the NASA Astrobiology Institute. The Travel Grant continues Jerry’s dedication to educating and involving future generations in space science and engineering pursuits.  The electronic application materials and instructions are accessible through the Soffen Fund website. Please visit http://nasa-academy.org/soffen/travelgrant/. Questions regarding the application or application process may be sent to travelgrant@nasa-academy.org.

Academic Scholarship Opportunity for Minorities in Computer Science
Submission Deadline – December 31, 2011

The Palantir Technologies is now accepting applications for a scholarship that is available for women and minorities who demonstrate outstanding abilities and achievement in their studies. Palantir Technologies is committed to advancing technology through the use of computer science, engineering and related technical disciplines.  By offering this grant, they hope to assist underrepresented minorities in obtaining their technical degrees and encourage them to make a difference through innovation.  Preference will be given to those students who display interest and proficiency in the areas of human-computer symbiosis, data visualization, machine learning, large-scale data analysis, distributed systems, and user experience. The recipient will receive a $10,000 grant awarded for the 2012 academic year. For more information and to apply online, please visit www.palantir.com/scholarship
