Call for Participation
XSEDE has received "in cooperation" status with ACM SIGAPP and the conference proceedings will be submitted to the ACM Digital Library.
The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is the most advanced, powerful, and robust collection of integrated advanced digital resources and services in the world. It is a single virtual system that scientists can use to interactively share computing resources, data, and expertise. Scientists and engineers around the world use these resources and services—such as supercomputers, collections of data, and new tools—to make our lives healthier, safer, and better. XSEDE, and the experts who lead the program, will make these resources easier to use and help more people use them.
XSEDE14, the 3rd annual conference, will showcase the discoveries, innovations, challenges and achievements of those who utilize and support XSEDE resources and services, as well as other digital resources and services throughout the world. The theme of XSEDE14 is Engaging Communities, to engage both traditional users of digital resources and people who have not traditionally used digital resources but would benefit from their usage.
The XSEDE14 conference is designed to engage and directly benefit diverse communities including students, educators, researchers and practitioners across all fields of study and scholarly research, with particular emphasis placed on engaging under-represented minorities, women, and people with disabilities. The conference will provide numerous opportunities for developers, applications teams, students, innovators, CIOs, IT staff, and policy makers from academia, government, industry and other organizations to engage in discussions that will assist them in significantly advancing their effective utilization of digital resources. From experts in the field, to people who are novices to the applications of digital resources, the XSEDE14 Conference will provide a range of formal and informal opportunities for people to interact and address their diverse needs and interests.
The Technical Program has four tracks – "Accelerating Discovery in Scholarly Research", "Hardware and Systems Software", "Software and Software Environments", and "Education, Outreach and Training". While the Technical Program encourages a diverse set of topics related to digital resources, the XSEDE14 Conference encourages submissions that address collaborations among the community of users and the providers of digital resources and services – "Collaborations with Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Providers." The focus for sessions on collaborations is to highlight experience and lessons learned from diverse communities working with organizations like XSEDE, the XSEDE Service Providers, and cyberinfrastructure providers world-wide, in maximizing the use of digital resources.
The full papers will be included in the Conference Proceedings and submitted to the ACM Digital Library. In addition, selected papers from all the tracks will be invited to extend the manuscripts to be considered for publication in a special issue of the journal of Concurrency and Computation Practice and Experience. Papers accepted for the "Education, Outreach, and Training" track will be invited to extend the manuscripts for publication in the Journal of Computational Science Education.
Students are strongly encouraged to actively participate in the Conference. For student submissions, the main work must be done by the student, the student must be the primary author, and the student must present the paper/abstract or the poster. Some student financial assistance may be available dependent upon NSF grant funding. Call for Participation
Submissions are sought for the following four tracks as well as on broader topics that span these areas. Authors are encouraged to address the Conference theme of Engaging Communities or the Technical Program focus of Collaborations with XSEDE or other CI Providers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed, and accepted submissions will be expected to address reviewer comments.
· Accelerating Discovery in Scholarly Research: This track will be about accelerating science, engineering, scholarship in the humanities, artistic endeavors, etc., by using advanced digital resources. Submissions are welcome from anyone, but, for this track, researchers are strongly encouraged to submit full papers. Accepted abstract-only submissions will be published in the conference proceedings but will not be entitled to submit full papers to the proceedings. We encourage papers with results and lessons learned derived from collaborations with digital resources providers, such as, but not limited to, XSEDE and the XSEDE Service Providers. Submissions are encouraged that demonstrate success bridging across campus and national resources. Submissions will be accepted based on their merit and should highlight which resources were used and how they enabled the discoveries. Submissions should clearly articulate the problem and outcomes; describe the computational methods (algorithms, techniques, software); and explain what resources were used and how the resources aided the accomplishments. Submissions to this track may emphasize the computational methods and how cyberinfrastructure resources enabled the research, while reserving detailed discussion of original research results for publication elsewhere.
· Technology (Hardware and Systems Software): Technology is the focal point of this track. Submissions should present technology developments and capabilities that enable increased performance, capability, capacity, productivity, usability and/or reliability of XSEDE resources. We encourage papers with results and lessons learned derived from collaborations with digital resources providers, such as, but not limited to, XSEDE and the XSEDE Service Providers. Topics may include, but are not limited to, new compute and storage systems, grid middleware, job schedulers, tracking and monitoring tools, workflow solutions, green computing, compilers, message passing libraries, networking and data management. Submissions should describe the technology in detail, discuss achieved or potential impact, and articulate future plans. Submissions describing work done on any large-scale cyberinfrastructure are invited, particularly if there are useful comparisons that can be drawn related to XSEDE or lessons from which XSEDE can learn.
Submission types: Paper (strongly preferred) or Abstract-only.
· Software and Software Environments (Gateways, Bridging, and Application Developers): This track will focus on the software and software environments built to enable efficient scientific computing solutions to research, collaboration, and education for one or multiple scientific user communities. Submissions should present data, computing, network, information, security and other computational challenges and opportunities and corresponding software solutions through the efficient and effective access to advanced science and engineering discovery environments such as, but not limited to, XSEDE. Submissions from software developers, and vendors should include details of software requirements, design strategies, architecture, implementation, build and test, and deployment; community-oriented software use and evaluation; and the sustainability of the developed software solutions. Submissions focusing on building software environments should highlight strategies for and approaches to software integration, modular frameworks, software and computation management, and the effectiveness of the environment in engaging community users. In general, this track provides a venue for sharing experiences and success stories in building science gateways, middleware, services, and applications for developing community problem-solving capabilities on cyberinfrastructure.
Submission types: Papers (strongly preferred) or Abstract-only.
· Education, Outreach, and Training (EOT): This track will focus on EOT efforts for engaging and sustaining a diverse scientific, academic, and industrial workforce in all fields of study. We encourage papers with results and lessons learned derived from collaborations with digital resources providers, such as, but not limited to, XSEDE and the XSEDE Service Providers. Submissions should represent successful efforts that help advance computational and data-enabled research or education by recruiting and preparing current and future generations to advance scientific discovery through the use of cyberinfrastructure. Submissions are especially encouraged that address the inclusion of traditionally under-represented communities (including women, minorities, people with disabilities, institutions, and disciplines). Papers will be given strong preference over abstract-only submissions.
Submission types: Papers (strongly preferred) or Abstract-only.
· Posters: Posters should present new results or promising work in progress. The topic should be related to the use of XSEDE, or other cyberinfrastructure providers, for scientific research and/or the development of new technologies for scientific computing that have the potential to enhance the capabilities of XSEDE resources or the broader XSEDE cyberinfrastructure.
Submission type: Abstract and optional mockup.
· Visualization Showcase: The Visualization Showcase delivers a digital representation of transcendent innovative imagery such as what can be accomplished via XSEDE's leading-edge technologies and the impact of transforming the future of scientific discovery. Submissions should be of general interest to the digital resources community including, but not limited to, traditional and non-traditional high-peformance computing scientific areas (i.e., digital humanities, bioinformatics, agent-based modeling, graph analysis). Please include a brief explanation why the research is relevant to improving the quality and diversity of the resources and services available to the open scientific research community. To follow the conference theme "Engaging Communities", we strongly encourage cross-discipline and cross-sector (industry, academic, laboratory) submissions as well.
Submission type: Abstract.
· Birds of a Feather (BOF): The BOF sessions are intended to engage attendees in exciting, informal, interactive sessions devoted to forward-looking topics drawn from the areas described in the submission guidelines for the conference.
Submission type: Proposal.
· Tutorials: Half- and full-day tutorials provide participants with in-depth training to effectively use XSEDE high-performance computing resources and services. Tutorials may cover a broad range of expertise and topics, including gateways, visualization, grid environments, data-intensive science, data management (within and across XSEDE resources), how to maximize productivity, computational science, parallel programming, optimization, systems management, the allocations process, and writing proposals.
Submission type: Proposal and draft tutorial content.
· A "Lightning Talk" plenary session: The Lightning Talks will showcase papers and abstracts from the four Technical Program tracks – Accelerating Discovery in Scholarly Research, Hardware and Systems Software, Software and Software Environments, and Education, Outreach and Training. Outstanding papers and abstracts will be selected for this plenary session by the program committee based on their broad appeal and potential impact on the entire community. Each Lightning Talk will consist of two components: (1) an 8-minute presentation highlighting the research and (2) a special poster session, immediately following the lightning talk session. Authors selected for the Lightning Talk session will be informed when they are notified of acceptance.
· Job Fair: The Job Fair is an excellent opportunity for representatives from all types of organizations to meet talented individuals (including students) with backgrounds in computer science, computational sciences, systems administration, computer center operations and management, networking, user services, and other relevant fields. XSEDE14 sponsors as well as other organizations looking for outstanding candidates for professional careers, internships, and graduate school opportunities.
· Sponsors: Sponsoring XSEDE14 provides an opportunity to promote your organization to all of the XSEDE14 attendees. The Conference includes an exhibit area for sponsors to showcase their organizations, products, and services and network with attendees. Several levels of sponsorship are available to both corporate and non-profit sponsors.
· Student Papers: Undergraduate and graduate students who are working on research projects that use XSEDE or campus-level resources are invited to submit papers describing their research. Student papers should be submitted to one of the four tracks – Accelerating Discovery in Scholarly Research, Hardware and Systems Software, Software and Software Environments, and Education, Outreach, and Training. An XSEDE14 award will recognize the best student paper. Submission details are provided below.
Submission type: Paper.
· Student Posters: Undergraduate and graduate students may submit posters demonstrating how they have used computational science -- including models, simulations, and visualizations -- to solve science, engineering, mathematics or data analysis problems. Efforts that emphasize the use of XSEDE or campus-level resources and cyberinfrastructure are of particular interest. Awards will recognize the best poster in each of the undergraduate and graduate categories. Submission details are provided below.
Submission type: Abstract.
· Other Student Participation Opportunities: There will be a one-day intensive collaborative modeling and analysis challenge, a session on careers in modeling and large data analytics, a mentorship program, a job fair, and opportunities for students to volunteer to assist with Conference activities. · Student Travel Grants: A limited number of student travel grants will be awarded for XSEDE14 pending funding from the National Science Foundation. Priority will be given to lead authors of accepted papers and posters that qualify as student papers/posters as detailed in the following submission instructions. The application form for a student travel grant is available here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5J7JMY3. Recipients will be notified after poster notifications as indicated below.

· All initial submissions should be in PDF. Final papers and abstract-only submissions should be submitted in PDF, following ACM format templates available on the ACM website: http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates (In extenuating circumstances and only if needed, we may request original files, MS Word or LaTeX, from authors of specific papers in order to ensure ACM Digital Library compatibility.)
· Authors should all be listed in submitted documents and in the EasyChair forms using the same spelling in both places. In the LaTeX template, to list more than six authors in the XSEDE14 publications, please specify all authors in the \author section exactly as in the author section of the EasyChair forms. Do not use the \additionalauthors section. Similarly, for the Word template, please specify all authors on the front page under the title and nowhere else (such as footnote). The XSEDE14 program schedule and proceedings will show author names and affiliations exactly as they are listed in the EasyChair forms.
· Papers, including student papers, should be no more than eight pages and must conform to the ACM proceedings templates. Papers should include the names and affiliations of all co-authors. Papers should be original works, not already published or under consideration for publication elsewhere. Extended papers for the special journal issue must have a minimum of 25% new content and must reference the publication in the XSEDE14 proceedings. Student authors should check the "Student paper (science-engineering, technology, software, EOT)" box in EasyChair under the "Title, Abstract and Other Information" section of the submission page. A student paper is one in which the work described was primarily done by a student who is also lead author of the paper. Papers must be presented by the student author in order to be eligible for the student paper award.
· Abstract-only submissions to the 4 tracks (Accelerating Discovery in Scholarly Research, Hardware and Systems Software, Software and Software Environments, and Education, Outreach, and Training) should be up to two pages in length, providing sufficient detail for reviewers to make informed judgments about the work. Inclusion of figures is encouraged. Abstracts should include the names and affiliations of all co-authors. Accepted abstract-only submissions will be published in the conference proceedings but will not be entitled to submit full papers to the proceedings.
· Poster submissions, including student posters, should be one page maximum. The abstract should contain the technical project description and the names and affiliations of all co-authors. An optional poster mockup may be submitted with the abstract. Details on size/format of the posters will be provided closer to the conference date, and at least one project contributor is expected to be present. Student poster submitters, depending on their student status, should check one of the two boxes – Undergraduate student poster or Graduate student poster – in EasyChair under the "Title, Abstract and Other Information" section of the submission page.
· Accepted poster submissions, including student submissions, presented at the conference during the scheduled poster session. At least one project contributor is expected to be present. Details on size/format of the posters will be provided closer to the conference date. Abstracts describing accepted posters will be published on the conference website. A student poster is one in which the work described was primarily done by a student who is also lead author of the poster. Posters must be presented by the student author in order to be eligible for a student poster award.
· Visualization abstracts should be one page maximum and should include: title of the submission, names and affiliations of all contributors (both image creation and science content), indication of which author will be presenting, XSEDE (or other cyberinfrastructure provider) resources used, description of the contribution the imagery makes to the science, and a Web or FTP link to view or download the animation or still image. NOTE: If submitters are unable to provide a Web link to movie and images, they can be uploaded via Dropbox. A Dropbox invitation will be sent to all who submit to the Visualization Showcase. Animations should be in a standard Windows- and Mac-compatible format such as MPEG, AVI, MOV, etc., preferably at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Still images can be in any generally used image format, such as TIFF, BMP, JPG, PNG, etc. No proprietary formats will be accepted, and a minimum resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels is recommended.
· Birds of Feather (BOF) proposals should be one page maximum and should specify: title and topic of the BOF and the names and affiliations of the organizers. BOF sessions will be canceled if none of the organizers are present to lead the discussion.
· Tutorial proposals should be two pages long. The first page should include a one-page summary with title and topic of the tutorial; names and affiliations of all instructors; software requirements; any prerequisites; whether the tutorial is half or full day; and whether the entire tutorial is introductory, intermediate, or advanced. The second page should include a detailed agenda of the material to be covered. Proposers may include a partial or full set of draft slides to be used for the tutorials, as well as instructions for hands-on activities. Preference will be given to hands-on activities and proposals that include substantial or full drafts of the tutorial slides and exercises. Please address your backup plans, in the case of any unanticipated difficulties (e.g., network outages) in your submission.
