Topic Descriptions:
Introduction to Linux/Unix basics: An introduction to the Linux and Unix basics will be provided in this session. An overview of interacting with clusters and HPC resources will also be provided through interactive teaching. There are no labs associated with this session.

Introduction to Parallel Programming: This session is intended for the audience having basic programming skills and experience in C/C++, Fortran and Linux.

C Programming: This session is intended for the beginners wishing to learn about the very basics of C programming. Demonstrations for running the code will be shown and the audience will be given small interactive exercises.

Fortran Programming: Fortran is a modern language that is reviewed and updated regularly to meet the needs of the scientific community. It facilitates a traditional procedural programming style, but also supports object-oriented programming similar to C++. Fortran programming skills are highly useful for developing new applications that achieve excellent performance, and for working with a large body of existing scientific codes that have been written in Fortran. These skills can be directly applied to using resources at computing centers, such as the Texas Advanced Computing Center, and on any Linux/Unix/Windows environment. There will be a short lab accompanying this session.

Computational Thinking: This session provides an overview of using computer models and inquiry-based learning to engage student learning in science, mathematics, and computer science.

Adding Computational Science to Curriculum: This session presents a showcase of how computational science transforms the education and research experience.

Introduction to Scientific Visualization: Users will receive instructions on the use of remote visualization software to visualize data sets generated on systems such as Ranger. A review of the scientific visualization process will precede an overview of the visualization software, including the parallel visualization software VisIt and Paraview. Labs will provide students with the opportunity to prepare data sets to be visualized using these applications. In addition, attendees will be introduced to the Longhorn visualization portal.

Research Data Management: In a research project, the creation, gathering, organization, analysis, and storage of data are central to the questions that the research is trying to solve. This workshop will introduce concepts and best practices in lifecycle data management to help researchers improve the efficiency of the research process, and aid the long-term preservation and reuse of data. The workshop will be divided in two sections. The first section – composed of lecture and discussions – will address key elements that have to be considered when managing any type of data in a research project – structured and unstructured, software and publications. From scheduling and organizing data, to metadata creation and workflow design, to storage, long term preservation, sharing, licensing and confidentiality, these themes will be discussed in general and in context with specific domain cases. During the second half, participants will draft a Data Management Plan following requirements established by funding agencies. Attendees are encouraged to “bring their data” to the workshop. This is, they will consider real cases from their research projects to answer questions such as how much data will be produced and what kind, and how will the data be structured, described, shared, archived, and published.
