Director, IT Research Support
Job Summary: Live in beautiful Wyoming. The University of Wyoming seeks an experienced, innovative, highly collaborative, team-oriented, leader to serve as its IT Director of Research Support. The position directs UWIT’s Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC) and works closely with the university’s Office of Research and Economic Development and with the research community to build a world-class advanced research computing and data-intensive infrastructure.
UW’s Information Technology’s ARCC provides UW’s research and academic community with a broad array of high performance computing; and data storage/transfer, technology and support, and plays a critical role in UW’s Tier 1 Engineering and Science Initiatives.
The ARCC provides research assistance through tutorials, workshops and application specialists to enable researchers to use local computational resources, UW’s 20% allocation on the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center’s new Cheyenne HPC, and other national resources such as XSEDE.

*Playing a key leadership role in nurturing the continual development of UW’s advanced research computing ecosystem.
*Maintaining and enhancing a sustainable financial model to support ARCC staffing and operations.
*Overseeing the ARCC team which is responsible for user, application and systems support for the UW research community as well as developing and implementing tools for computing systems in a high performance computing environment.
*Working closely with faculty and graduate students to understand their research and their needs, developing solutions and funding strategies, and actively pursuing infrastructure-related funding opportunities and partnerships.
*Working and collaborating closely with other IT units, including IT Security, IT Infrastructure and the IT Data Center group to develop and maintain a non-duplicative infrastructure. Promoting the use of strong security with the UW research community.
*Working closely with the CIO to enhance the university’s HPC infrastructure.
*Developing and maintaining related connections outside of UW: relationships and partnerships with regional and national high performance computing facilities, peers, peer institutions, service providers and vendors.
*Developing and maintaining an inclusive workplace.
The successful candidate must have:
- B.S. in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent.
- 3 years of directly related experience including project management and team leadership.
- Clear experience with and demonstrated ability to foster excellent team-work and collaboration.
- Clearly demonstrated commitment to customer service, customer satisfaction and customer success.
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience with significant national or international scientific computing initiatives.
Preferred skills include the following:
- An advanced degree in computational science, scientific visualization, science or engineering.
- 5 or more years of directly related experience.
- Experience in evaluating computing performance issues including compute, memory, interconnect, networking and file systems.
- Experience in utilizing advanced research computing technologies to enable scientific discovery.
- Experience applying advanced software tools and computational technologies in a dynamic and diverse research setting.
*Extensive knowledge in the current trends and the use of leading edge, research computing and related networking technologies.
*Demonstrated experience in a higher education environment and in supporting research in a higher education environment.
*Management experience of an advanced computing environment on a university campus.
*Demonstrated ability securing funding from federal research programs through proposal preparation.
*Demonstrated ability to create a self-sustaining enterprise.
*Demonstrated experience developing research partnerships within and across institutions.
*Demonstrated ability to build interpersonal relationships with customers, faculty and technical staff. *Demonstrated ability to foster open communication; adhering to the principles of trust, teamwork and collaboration.
